In an Inquirer article in November 1997, Cramer was described as a frenetic former newspaper reporter whose attire was wrinkled and scruffy, whose sleep times fell between 11 p.m. and 3:30 a.m., and who recharged himself during the day with ping-pong breaks in his New York office. At Springfield High in the early 1970s, Cramer was captain of the soccer team, a runner, editor of the school paper, and president of the senior class. At Harvard, he was editor of the student newspaper, the Harvard Crimson, which led him - after a summer selling peanuts at Veterans Stadium - into reporting jobs for newspapers in Tallahassee, Fla., and Los Angeles. At Harvard Law School, Cramer showed a talent for stock-picking, which led to his career on Wall Street. He had less success with an investment he made in 1997 in The Player magazine in Philadelphia. The monthly magazine, aimed at the rich and powerful of the region, folded in March. I guess he couldn't make the right call then. But look at the bucks he gets. <g>
