...Or the sky may fall tomorrow. :-) That PSX2 is a mean looking game machine (on paper). It will probably blow away any 640x480 game on the PC. Kind of weak on size of embedded video memory --- this probably limits what resolutions it can support. Still, if you build something that's supposed to have 5yrs life, it should not be obsolete upon release (like the original PSX. [Nice gamebox, but you have to admit that the Voodoo on a PII blew it away -- and no perspective correction] Perhaps PC's & STBs will be unified in 2001 will have graphics chips that should have decent gameplay, but at resolutions like 1920x1080 [progressive-100Hz!] and better looking eye-candy. And those HDTV sets will finally be affordable. Anyone involved in the PC industry should have realized by now that the need for doubling performance and features is what keeps the growth/profit/stock going. If moore's law is ever stopped, there will be a lot of engineers/programmers that have to work harder to pay for their ferarris. And we have to change our portfolio to hold pepsi or P&G or something really really boring like Pfizer and viagra. Do you think it will ever stop? [After upgrading through the 90+key kbd to the 104key to the 107 win95 kbd, I now realize my 5 kbds at home are now obsolete. I need to have the kbds with ACPI/web-browser keys --- more indication that the need to upgrade has not stopped!] So, even if the PSX was #1 in gameplay upon release, its reign will be measured in months, not years and certainly not forever. Heck, [suspend disbelief and dare to dream] :-) After PSX2, before PSX3, ATI could acquire sony (or vice versa :-)) at some point and merge to become the biggest PCbox+STB+gamebox unified entertainment provider of the world. That would be fun :-) :-) If you believe rumours from the redmond grapevine : ATI has a fair chance to dominate any STB offering based on WinCE. Who knows? What do you think?I think SONY will come out on top with a PSX2 that can double as a STB and give Intel a run for the money. When the PSX2 comes out it will kill the low end PC market since the PSX2 is more powerful than a Pentium III.
