QuentR: If I understand your theory - the heavy selling interest from the institutions would be the direct result of the price moving higher: but who moved it higher? It is hard to believe that a large number of retails decided altogether that CPQ was to be bought on a down day in the market. So if it was not institutions buying maybe it was the individual clients of an institution which has put out a buy recommendation. Just a thought.

Another potential explanation, that a few institutions bought big early in the day, (and there were some big blocks); this moved the price up, and the rest of the day was momentum, individuals assuming that there was news coming.

BYW I like steady growth too, but I prefer huge gaps up.
