Vendit, DSS uses a hybrid system in which downloads are from the satellite, but uploads have to go through a telephone modem. So if you request a web site, say it has extensive graphics, video, or whatever, your request goes out over a telephone modem, then the download gets transmitted to the satellite, from which it is beamed down to your antenna. Your satellite antenna does not have the capability to transmit to the satellite, as such a capability requires high power, and even if you had it, the satellite bandwidth could not handle high speed up and downloads.

That is not only a problem for satellites, by the way, although they have more of a problem because of their power limitations. But even ATHM had that problem when some users were uploading large amounts of data, and if they are all on the same line, it gets clogged and slows down.

Load balancing for broadband applications is a difficult problem, with lots of different technologies and switches being developed to handle it.

Thanks, it was Dish Network, and according to their sales rep, it does require the phone line and your existing computer modem, so I guess there really isn't any benefit when it comes to what finally makes it way into your CPU.
