Anyone who missed the Hauppauge conference call at 4:30 can hear a replay of it by calling 800/625-5288 and entering the ID Code Number as 541914. I listened to it twice. After a brief summary by the CEO, CFO and VP, there is a Q&A period which could be conservatively described as "WAVX-DOMINATED". Numerous questions were asked about HAUP's relationship with Wave, few questions were asked about anything else. From the presentations and the answers to the questions, I got the following (summarizing and paraphrasing, not quoting): - - HAUP sees the Wave business model as central to the success of the rapidly emerging data broadcast field (use of licensed TV broadcast facilities to transmit data, programming, content, etc., etc., etc.). - - There will be Wave chips in both the analog (apparently ready to ship now) and the digital (available 4Q'99) HAUP WIN-TV implementations. - - They used the term "Embassy" in referring to the Wave implementation that is apparently ready to ship imminently in HAUP's analog board, as well as referring to that which will be included in the digital board, which will be available in October. It is my recollection that it was felt previously that the Wave implementation that would ship in the earliest HAUP boards would be a more primitive "Wave Meter" functionality and would not have some of the more functional aspects that distinguish the "WAVE Meter" from the "Embassy chip". If my interpretation and recollection are correct, this would indicate that if HAUP in actuality becomes one of the first deployers of the Wave product, a more advanced implementation than originally expected will get out onto the street earlier in the game than we originally thought - a definitely positive development. (To be fair it is also possible that the title "Embassy" is becoming generic for Wave-enablement and that I am reading too much into their words). - - When pressed about whether the relationship with Wave would continue beyond the analog boards and into the digital TV boards and thereafter, the HAUP execs stated that their relationship with Wave is far more extensive than that of Wave just being a chip supplier and that the Wave business model is an essential part of their technology - technological partners. - - The HAUP execs made it relatively obvious that the timing of the availability of the first Wave-enabled boards (i.e. the delay in getting them into the hands of consumers) is being determined by Wave, not by HAUP. At first this was a little unsettling to me and made me think that their deployment holdup was the result of some problem at Wave or a problem with the Wave/Embassy system. Further comments by them and subsequent re-listening to their initial comments, set my mind at ease and made it clearer that the holdup is temporary and that it is being done in concert with HAUP's agreement with Wave to make the actual shipment of HAUP boards coincident with a major announcement program by Wave. ******* I must admit that even as bullish as I am, and even as superbly confident as I am in Peter's ability to orchestrate the Wave rollout in a way that maximizes the benefits of all of its myriad of elements, prior to this conference call I was getting a little worried that maybe there was some unforeseen problem that was resulting in the delays in getting the Wave-enabled WIN-TV boards onto the shelves. As the result of my listening to the HAUP CC, I now feel that the delay is likely a crafty part of the "Grand Plan". The quick summary above does not really do justice to the full information content and Wave-related impact of the live conference call. I would recommend that it would be a good investment of the 10-15 minutes that it takes to listen to it. It's not earth-shattering information, but it is the kind of confidence-maintaining thing that offsets some of the when-will-we-relist-and-why-hasn't-it-happened-yet jitters that even the most loyal and confident of us must be experiencing to one degree or another. Steve PS - I'd be interested in hearing views of others that have listened to the CC.
