Its 30 days by SEC regulation. However, some brokers don't actively try to enforce it, so you can get away with it. However if they catch you doing it, they will screw you. First they'll cover the short at the market and make sure you cover at the high of the day. If you already covered the short, they might cancel the short trade and leave you long the stock. Then they might close your account. You might even have trouble opening an account somewhere else.
