jim: Well, we told you that the channel stuffing was a big factor in the health of CPQ.

You haven't gotten any argument from me about channel stuffing for a long time because, frankly, I don't know what the hell they're doing.

BTW, I hope the "we" you refer to doesn't mean you're still associating yourself with this low life....

The channel stuffing, contra revenue thesis, is an attempt by analysts to blame their miscalculations about COMPAQ on the company. The Street.com lives by reporting analyst angst, politics and gossip as though it were news. That article was a bit more rounded and careful than the author usually manages but it was still entirely derivative of self-interested gossip. The author is the mouthpiece of Kumar on whom he relies for journalistic relevance.

Bottom line is, that he and all his informants say that COMPAQ has done nothing wrong, that COMPAQ follows conventional accounting practices for the sector (which are also followed by its main competitors). The sums are probably larger in COMPAQ's case because it sells more PC's than anybody else.

There is an argument that the industry should adopt accounting practices that are easier to understand.

All analysts quoted recommended COMPAQ as a buy.

Unless you are considering buying CPQ, I wonder why you constantly revisit this thread to re-hash arguments that have been thoroughly aired - so thoroughly that even The Street.com is writing about them.
