I find it is fairly common for single parents to sit down with their children and do activities. Just as in a two-parent family it is fairly common for ONE parent to do activities with their children (sometimes switching off). The point at issue was whether today the classic nuclear family has splintered as Lear suggested. It was not uncommon among my friends while I was growing up for the whole family to watch TV together. Lear's point is that that doesn't happen today. Looking for verification or denial here, along with a broader point that beyond TV there is so much to do and there are so many demands on parental time that nuclear families seldom do much all together. But since it takes one parent to drive the kids to a movie or to go bowling or something, it may be a lot more common for a single parent family.
