>>Stewart Kalter, head of research at Spencer Clarke LP, speculated that MCI WorldCom could purchase a company like Denver- based Qwest Commmunications International Inc., which is building a nationwide fiber-optic network, to expand its reach and compete with rival AT&T, the nation's No. 1 long-distance carrier and soon-to-be No. 1 cable company.

Doesn't WCOM already own ANS as part of the WCOM/AOL/CSERV/MCI deal? I have a hard time seeing them receive regulatory approval to buy Qwest. They already control a large percentage of the Internet backbone.
