My strongest personal reason for avoiding direct debit is another aspect of loosing control of the process. I had a number of direct debit relationships with billers a few years back. Then I had to move and change my bank accounts. What a nightmare. Even though I notified each seperately, which was a royal pain, they did not all follow through in a reasonable time. The result was missed payments, more phone calls etc. I will never do that again. The consolidator model avoids that.
