Christopher, I used "I" only because I did not qualify, under your definition, as a "family." The fact is that yes, we did, husband and I, and all the kids, spend lots of consecutive hours together, apart from meals. Furthermore, friends of ours and theirs were often included.

The thing I liked about our household was that the ages were always mixed: young, old, middle-aged, everyone interacted with everyone else. To my mind, that is even more important than doing the nuclear family bit. For one thing, it prevents that "generation gap" from developing. When they reach the dreaded teens, children raised that way are unlikely to consider older people weird out-of-it strangers, IMO.

Good night, all!

Joan

WE do lots of stuff together- for example we get season passes to Marine World and we spend lots of weekends trekking around together. And we all go together, each child picking out one place they want to go and we ALL go - none of that splitting up and each going it alone stuff. We all spend time together on our boat- and that's an all day thing, and we are in a very tiny space so that's REAL together time. Then we watch the Simpsons, King of the Hill, the Family Guy, Futurama, Star Trek and Early Edition together- because those are family favorites. We USED to do family shopping at Costco together but since I am pissed off at Costco we have taken to cruising Target instead. We spend all our weekends together- but then my kids aren't in sports, which tend to fragment the family if you've got more than one kid. I try to keep my kids activities confined to after school so that the weekends are family time.
