An EXCELLENT question.

However much we may decry (as we should) the quality of TV, it has a power no other medium in history has every had (not even the radio in the30s and 40s) to reach a large number of people with a common experience with enormous efficency.

A question we haven't yet touched on her -- to what extent does TV advertising shape the culture. If sitcoms reflect more than shape culture, is the same also true of the commercial messages? Would we be the VCR society we are if it hadn't been for TV advertising? etc., etc., etc.
