Quick question...probably better here than the At Home site..but why is At Home needed at all?

This is what I mean by that.

When I dial up my 56k ISP service..the only software I am using to dial it up is Micrsoft's dialer (included in everyones Win, then I use Microsoft Internet explorer to go to different web sites.

Now assume I'm using AT&T Cable service. If Cable now replaces my ISP, and I can use Microsoft Internet Explorer again to browse where I want to go...what exactly is At Home's function?

In other words, why doesn't AT&T sell basic internet service directly to me ,like they currently do their long distance, and take care of the billing and etc..and let me worry about where I want to go via my web browser.

Does AT&T really need a middleman to sign up people for ATHOME service?

Why don't other cable companies just act on their own?

Thanks
