ot--palm pilot prices to come down--- 3Com to break into wireless products-WSJ NEW YORK, May 7 (Reuters) - Networking-equipment maker 3Com Corp. is expected next week to announce a major foray into wireless networking products, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday. The development fits into 3Com's overall quest for faster growth from new revenue sources, as demand for its modems and other traditional mainstays fades, the newspaper said. The wireless office-networking products are expected to be available in the fall, with 3Com shipping out a new version of its Palm organiser with a wireless connection to the Internet, the newspaper said. Earlier this week, 3Com outlined products that will let cellular-telephone companies offer data services as well as voice services, the newspaper said. The Journal said wireless networks are popular in the retail sector and in such places as warehouses and hospitals, but have yet to be widely adopted in general offices because of the expense. But with the onset of new technology, that is beginning to change, the newspaper said. The Journal said 3Com's In-Stat Group expects global sales of wireless-networking products to reach $1.2 billion by 2001, up from $391 million last year. Separately, 3Com's Palm Computing company said it was lowering prices on two models of its popular Palm Pilot electronic organisers, the newspaper reported. The Palm III's suggested retail price was cut to $249 from $299, and the Palm Pilot professional edition, an older model, reduced to $149 from $199.
