Z,

Nothing on the horizon currently to drive us to femto like the pressures that drove us to pico. Head wafer fabs have capacity, & it won't be as significant of a cost reducer in the wafer process as nano to pico was. Maybe reduced mass enabling faster access times and perhaps micro-actuator schemes will provide some appealing benefits for the highest performance products.

Meanwhile order of magnitude more difficult is correct.

Z,

<<Hutchinson has described the next generation Femto heads as "orders of magnitude" more difficult. In your estimation is this and accurate assessment or somewhat of an exaggeration. >>

It is oversimplification to say that it is just more of the same. They continue to ratchet down on tolerances and performance. Actually the whole story of disk drive technology is really quite amazing. I agree. Femtos are going to be tough.

Best,
Stitch
