I think you do not do justice to the current pontificate, which is merely reasserting the authority of the Magisterium over recalcitrant individuals, especially theologians, and trying to reawaken European piety at a time when the Church is suffering a shortage of vocations. After all, this Pope helped to topple the Communists through his moral influence, and that was a good thing. Why not seek to lead in other areas? Anyway, I don't think that it is bad for there to be an active expression of faith within society, but I agree that we in the States do not have the same historical problems with clericalism that Europe does....

Gustave--- On the subject of the current Pontiff, the words of the President of Rumania (on the occasion of a Papal visit):

Constantinescu paid tribute to the Pope's role in creating the conditions for the collapse of communism.

``The enthronement of your holiness in the place of Saint Peter was an essential act to free the countries of eastern Europe from the atheistic communist dictatorship,'' he said.
