oh! I thought you were referring to the original DEC Thick Ethernet cable [802.5] in building risers and lateral runs.

They were tapped periodically for distribution to the desk, every so many feet, by a device known as a vampire tap. The tap tool was a hand screw drill, of sorts, that penetrated the outside of the cable sheath, through the braid, and down to the center thick conductor where contact was made.

This was one of the ways Cabletron got their first big break. Underpricing DEC on these cable devices that sat on the cables, for distribution of ethernet to the desk. I'm sure there are other folklorish things that can be said about Cabletron, but this is my recollection of one of their early claims to fame.
