Dave,

Thanks for PMing me the article about Vodophone and chip rates. First, this sounds like the old W-CDMA story. "We don't want to lower the chip rate because it will lower the capacity"... This is interesting when you look at the two systems and discover that CDMA-2000 is more spectrally efficient. In other words, the lower chiprate system can pack more capacity/MHz than the higher chiprate system, yet as usual they want us to believe otherwise. Why?? Sounds like some are still resisting the truth. Remember, a lot of talk has been made about how much time and R&D money has been spent on W-CDMA(a claim I've disputed since reading the ITU submissions). I don't think we're going to see these same people do a complete about face, however..... they are tying to keep face, not lose it. It's still about being different and also somehow better!

Regarding Vodophones 5% solution. Without knowing the actual circuitry involved....it has to do with analog components... certain filtering related components probably. A closer chiprate would allow redundancy and less component count/cost.

:)
