Well, we lucked out with Orion 3 being not well booked and going in to a poor market. The loss was not significant. T*7, on the other hand, is already well booked, and essential to the growth of Loral. It MUST reach orbit. They cannot afford failure. So, we see the Atlas III using the well proven Russian RD-180(?) engine, and the totally screwy Centaur upper stage in a new combination, put together by LMT, who has not been the most successful company lately. That means new guidance systems, software, etc. Note the effect this combo had on the Delta III's maiden voyage. Why be the guinea pig for a new commercial launcher? Why put what will be your best pre-sold sat on a new launcher? I asked this comment of management 6 months ago. Why risk it? We have seen the success of being the test mule--Zenit, Delat III, and now Atlas III? No thanks. Better a three month delay than 2 years. We may have a delay with Atlas III anyway seeing that LMT has called for outside help on their program.
