I have not suggested people sell their OS stocks. I have not sold any of my core holdings recently and do not intend to for a long time. While I still believe the short term will most likely trend down, short term gyrations don't affect my long term thinking.

At the same time I also trade a portion of my portfolio. When trading, the parameters I use for making buy/sell decisions are significantly different and the short term gyrations are everything. As it so happens, I had been using my trading stash exclusively in the oil patch until I closed out the last of my positions yesterday. I didn't put trading money into the patch until mid-April and the run was fantastic. Great returns now locked into my portfolio, even with the tax consequences.

I have been very successful having using both disciplines. I don't trade more than 20% of my portfolio at any given time and the metrics I use for trading are almost a complete opposite of what I use for long term investing. Each person must weigh their options and determine what's right for them.

best of luck with your investments,
Michael
