Hi Darrell,

Yes, two different methods but I disagree that the chip rate is correlated to this. I mean to say that the chip rate per se has nothing to do with whether we're running sychronous or asynchronous or the type of detection used. Regarding the time to engineer a chip and get to market.... sure why not two years... why not a year? The real question here is when did they start? I don't presently know if they started yesterday or two years ago or if they even plan to produce W-CDMA asics. My point is that if they do decide... they probably already have made the decision(or had contingency plans) and they have more experience with actual systems to bring to the party. Don't forget who Jacobs and Viterbi are. In my opinion, this whole asynchronous, matched filter approach is inferior in performance. I would say that Jacobs and Viterbi feel the same way since they probably understand the tradeoffs as well as anyone and previously chose not to go there. I read recently about some initiative(I'm sure Clark remembers who these guys are)touting their matched filter techniques as being superior for quick acquisition etc in a data environment. I thought this funny because the coherent pilot(as in CDMA-2000) scheme has no need for such acquisition techniques and is inherently superior in performance.
