Vaclav Havel wrote a short essay for the New York Review of Books in the bad old days called "A Certain Reticence", where he noted that dissidents, while they appreciated the support of Western intellectuals for political freedom, couldn't understand why they were not more forthright about condemning Communism, but seemed instead to be intent upon "neutralism", and ready to sacrifice justice for the peace of detente....The short answer is that they were all socialists, and prone to fall into the fellow- travelling mode...
