The awesome idea is that God cares in some manner about what happens to us, that he can be characterized as being indignant over injustice, or tender in His mercy, and that though the reality may differ markedly, nevertheless the terms are not wholly inadequate. To put it another way, God is someone who understands the difficulty of human existence and is rooting for us to become fully human, to develop morally and intellectually; to succeed in our most important roles, such as husband, wife, and parent; and to achieve some degree of justice and prosperity within our communities.
