That evil mean and nasty line has been stuck in my head all day and I think I finally came up with another part of the song. Was it "Don't Step on the Grass"?

Regarding the Vietnam song, I found these lyrics from the Jaime Brockett tune - and was very surprised to see it was written by Michael Smith (composer of "The Dutchman"). Does it sound familiar?

Lyrics from an early '60s hit for Nat King Cole . . .

Newborn whippoorwills were calling from the hills
Summer was a-coming in but fast
Lots of daffodils were showing off their skills
Nodding all together
I could almost hear them whisper
Go on and kiss her
Go on and kiss her now
