LUCENT WINS "BEST" AWARDS -- Lucent is rated "Best Overall" and "Best
R&D" in Red Herring's list of public company
superstars in the publication's special June issue on the
100 top companies of the electronic economy.

Best overall: This year marks a repeat Best Overall win for the company in the
prime position to control the converged voice and data network. With its broad
product line of communications
equipment, its enormous R&D resources, and a mass of strategic partnerships,
Lucent has become the pacesetter for all of high tech. Best R&D: Quite simply,
every other company's R&D efforts pale next to Lucent's. Its Bell Labs division
has the most widely admired -- and feared -- patent portfolio in the industry,
covering areas as immediately practical as high-density data storage and as
technologically far out as DNA-based, self-
creating materials. [Red Herring, 6/99]

KYA27 - The Nortel product is an "optical amplifier", not a laser. Read the PR. As for MCI-WorldCom, they are doing more than testing, they are conducting an "in service" trial.
