Chuzz- If you look at it on a market share basis, Gateway is pretty cheap..(ie, Dell could buy marketshare cheap)...

Think about the additional cost savings given the larger purchases
of components Gateway/Dell would mean..

Gateway could also be fill a couple holes in Dell's current lineup....allow Dell to go even further down the consumer chain...

Do Waitt and Dell get along? I seem to recall reading about some animosity going a ways back...Waitt would surely want to be very independent (apparently that's what he told Pfeiffer back when Pfeiffer was inquiring a couple years back)...Don't know if MD would be happy with such an independent arrangement...

Also has value as a defensive manouver, as you have mentioned...

How much value would it add if Dell can say (a couple years, maybe 3-4 yrs. earlier, than under current growth patterns) that they are the #1 PC seller in the world...I reckon that's worth something...

What if Dell bought Gateway AND took over the bulk of IBM PC manufacturing sometime in the next 2-3 years....geez, that would get us over 20%, and near 25%......

Wow.

Would the dilution be worth it?

Just some musings...
