Can you guarantee that it will be faster than cable once cable is upgraded No, but when are they going to upgrade the cable? They are SOO slow in getting into new markets already, much less making the existing lines better. And as for AOLs bid on UMG, AOL has stated that they are taking all cable opportunities into consideration. UMG was just one of them. Could have even been a headfake to make all of those people complaining about AOLs lack of cable shut up for a while.

I can't guarantee that DSL will be faster than cable. On the other hand no one can guarantee that cable will be faster. It's looks like the DSL technology of dedicated connection to the home is better when more and more users are added. Cable will have performance degradation when more users are added even after upgrade.

Another plus for DSL is the service provider. I'll take my telephone provider over my cable provider every time when reliability and response are in question.

All that does not mean that DSL will be the winner. Betamax was better than VHS and we all know who was the winner.

Forgive me in advance...I haven't read all of today's posts on this thread. But it is obvious that we have the same problem on this thread that you can see elsewhere on SI. No wonder AOL stock is tanking, when it should be going up on what is really good news for investors.

Many people posting on the Internet and on SI have a complete and total misunderstanding of the Microsoft/AOL/AT&T situation, and then we have a few wise people like Steeny trying to clear it up.

Everyone on this thread who does not do so already should, each and every morning, go to the following website (especially today, where there are three or four big stories about this situation) and read the in-depth coverage of companies such as AOL, Microsoft and the rest of the techs.

(Business section)

I have worn myself out in the last 24 hours on another thread trying to straighten some people out about AOL's mission and goals and, lately, wisdom.

FAct: AOL does not need to purchase any cable company anywhere and wisely did not participate in the Media One thing, thereby saving bundles for investors, who instead of cheering are wailing and selling off their stock.

The CEO of T has already stated publicly that he is happy to work with AOL to give AOL the cable access it wants. T reportedly will have access to 60 percent of the homes in the U.S. AOL needs more than that---AOL subscribers are nationwide. Do you really think AOL should go out a buy "a" cable company? No....AOL needs the legislation that was introduced in Congress, supposedly this week by a Virginia congressman, to open access to cable lines to companies like AOL. And by the way, some areas of the U.S. have no cable access at all, but I'll bet there are plenty of AOL customers living in those areas.

Today's Washington Post reports that the feds have generally not stood in the way of consolidation in the cable, phone, internet industry, so I have faith that T will get this deal done and be a nice business contact for Steve Case.

If you need more than I've already said, go to my profile on SI and read what I have posted elsewhere on this topic. Meanwhile, best to read the Washington Post every morning before pushing buy and sell buttons on your computer. Sorry if I sound grumpy, but uninformed investors are hurting my stock. Knowledge is power.
