Unitrode Multi-mode SCSI Terminator Offers Highest Bandwidth, Smallest Footprint
Supports ULTRA3 SCSI Standard
MERRIMACK, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 1999--Again leading the industry in active termination circuits for Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI), Unitrode Corporation (NYSE:UTR - news) announces its newest family of multi-mode SCSI terminators which offer the highest bandwidth and smallest footprint in the industry. SCSI is a data bus standard of interface which permits the clean, high-speed transmission of data between peripherals and processing units, such as between computers and RAID storage devices or within servers.

The UCC5628, Unitrode's new 14-line multi-mode SCSI chip, eases the transition from single-ended (SE) SCSI to Low Voltage Differential (LVD) SCSI. The new ULTRA3-compliant chip from Unitrode supports rates of data transmission up to 160 MB per second. The UCC5628 is designed for use in mother board, host adapter card, backplane and controller board applications in various systems including professional workstations, applications servers, data warehouse servers, RAID systems and JBOD systems.

Unitrode's new device supports the ULTRA3 standard as defined by the SCSI Trade Association. The Ultra3 Ultra160/m SCSI technology offers improved manageability and full backward compatibility with the existing SCSI standard, while delivering faster transfer rates than other deployed I/O interfaces such as Ultra DMA, IEEE1394 or fiber channel.

Commenting on the product announcement, Bill Wilkes, Interface Business Line Director at Unitrode, said, ''The UCC5628, Unitrode's second family of ULTRA3 terminators, marks another milestone in Unitrode innovation in SCSI terminators. This device is compatible with the older SE SCSI and the newer LVD SCSI, the protocol for all transfer rates above 40MB/second. The UCC5628 automatically senses the bus and switches the termination to either SE or LVD SCSI, depending on which type of devices are connected to the data bus.''

The UCC5628 permits operation between 2.75V and 5.25V, the widest operating range in the industry and offers the highest bandwidth available (over 500MHz). In addition, the device's 14-line single active terminator contains all functions required to terminate, auto detect, and switch modes for Ultra2 and Ultra3 bus architectures. Other features of the UCC5628 include a 48-pin LQFP package to improve reliability and reduce footprint, as well as LVD & SE status indicator LED drives to permit visual bus status indication whether the terminator is connected or disconnected.
