AOL always comes through...

'Nuts in general have been out of fashion for a couple weeks now because of the big runups and valuation worries.

IMHO AOL doesn't have to buy a cable company to get the speeds they require...all they need are alliances with a few.

An agreement with AT&T seems very likely to me as does an alliance with Paul Allen who's been sucking up all the Cable he can get his hands on. Microsoft, AT&T, and AOL all seem to be getting pretty cozy and that, coupled with their sheer numbers, will give AOL all the clout they need to stay on top for several years.

FWIW

Paul {:-)

The way I see it is that by the time AT&T is ready to offer all these great new services by cable AOL will have about umpteen million more members & AT&T will need them. You got to remember also at what cost will AT&T offer their services, and will people want to pay X amount for them.

My take is this, right now the big bad gov't has its eyes on the T & MSFT deal and do NOT like it. They probably just cannot find a way to stop it....yet.

AOL might flounder a little here but long term, they too will get an answer to the cable riddle. Maybe they will buy CS

AOL CEO said, on cnbc, that cable internet is over rated and that HDSL has their attention now. Said their subscribers are not clamoring for cable.

Barbara,

I think AOL will do just fine. The FCC is going to look at the AT&T/MediaOne deal REEEEEAL close. One of their concerns when AT&T bought TCI was that cable was closed to ISP's. I think that IF the deal goes through that cable will be opened to the ISP's - not for free, but opened, and maybe not at the same time or a condition of, but eventually AOL and other ISP's will gain access. And when they do, maybe AOL does that $400 thing(?)

This is JMO, I don't consider myself that knowledgeable in this area so I would like to hear what Tim and the other more knowledgeable contributors to this outstanding thread have to say??????
