FYI...<<Dell Says Co. Could Gain As Compaq Searches For CEO
Dow Jones Newswires //May 7, 1999

NEW YORK -- Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) could gain ground on archrival Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) while that company searches for a new chief executive, Michael Dell said in a television interview.

"In the short term, that may create some opportunities for us," Dell, founder and chief executive of the company, said in the interview with CNBC.

Compaq dismissed Eckhard Pfeiffer from the chief executive's office April 18. The company is being run by director and co-founder Ben Rosen until a permanent chief executive is found.

Dell repeated his frequent assertion that the company would continue to grow faster than the computer industry rate, which is forecast to be about 14% in 1999.

"People are going to continue to see Dell is growing much faster than the market," he said. "Certainly we expect we will be the best-performing company in our sector."

He said Dell is getting "more comfortable" with the year 2000 transition. Some observers have worried that corporate spending on technology will slow later this year as companies concentrate on repairing outdated software systems.

"We haven't seen as dramatic an impact" as some had forecast, Dell said.

Further, he said Dell should see strong demand from the small-business and government markets in the second half of 1999.

Mohan and Scott,

This is what they write:

thestreet.com

the speculation is that one of Dell's COO's in charge of online corporate sales would go to Compaq," said the trader

Now, it may very well be that they mean the Vice Chairmans when they say COO. AFAIR, one of them was due to retire in the next few years. Given that MD is only 34 as well as the founder and the largest (Is that correct? Will check.) individual shareholder in the company, I would in fact worry about the other gentleman leaving DELL for a CEO position in another company. Good managers leaving for a rival is never good news and I hope they both had nice option packages granted along with MD in the recent review. :-)

But, it may very well be just a rumor after all.

Mohan and Scott,

COO, that's what they report, but may be they mean VCs as Scott pointed out instead. My worry always has been that given MD's age, founder and largest shareholder status, the two VC's will probably never become CEOs. One, I understand, is due to retire in the next few years. But what about the other? Losing good managers to a rival is always bad news. Now, it may be just a rumor after all, but I do hope that the two VCs have juicy option packages vested over eternity ... :-)

TYX.X now above 5.8 ... goodness!
