Teleglobe to announce new technology

NEW YORK, May 7 (Reuters) - Teleglobe Inc. (TGO.TO - news) (TGO - news), the world's third-biggest carrier of international voice traffic, said it will unveil on Monday a new technology that will help
allow it compete with rivals such as Global Crossing Ltd. (GBLX - news) and Level 3 Communications Inc. (LVLT - news)

Teleglobe will host a press conference at Manhattan's Plaza Hotel on
Monday to outline its $5 billion announcement.

Additional details were not immediately available.

Montreal-based Teleglobe has direct links via a vast web of ocean-floor cables and satellites to 160 countries. The company has licenses to resell facilities-based telecom services in 23 countries.

Teleglobe's $7 billion merger with Dallas-based Excel made it one of the largest long distance call providers in the United States. The company is transforming itself from a pure wholesaler into a retailer of telecom services.

Bermuda-based Global Crossing has undersea and land-based fiber optic communications networks. Ohmaha, Neb.-based Level 3 is building an advanced communications network in the United States.
