At Long Last!... Light At the End of the DSL Tunnel; 2000 Expected to be a Watershed Year for DSL

NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 1999--According to a recent report released by Cahners In-Stat Group, worldwide DSL subscribers are expected to increase 150 percent in 1999 and top over 2 million new subscribers in 2000.

The North American market is leading the way with more than half of the total DSL subscribers through 2003, reports the high-tech market research company.

Cahners In-Stat Group expects ADSL-lite to be primarily a North American phenomenon, where Internet connectivity is the primary driver behind high-speed access. In other regions of the world where video, gaming and pair-gain are significant drivers, SDSL and full-rate ADSL are expected to find the greatest penetration.

"The road for DSL is still rocky and DSL is not expected to overtake analog modems in the near future," said Shannon Pleasant, Senior Analyst for Cahners In-Stat Group's Data and Voice Communications Group.

"Despite all of the back-patting and high-fiving from the industry for the progress made over the last year, there are several technical barriers standing in the way of a truly mass market. In most instances, the infamous copper pair is still a mystery as is the penetration and complications of the Digital Loop Carrier (DLC).

"However, Cahners In-Stat Group expects that the combined efforts of silicon and equipment vendors will prove these barriers surmountable and we will depend on the service providers to open the flood gates."

Cahners In-Stat Group also reports:

-- To date, CLECs in the US have been the most aggressive in DSL

deployment, offering primarily SDSL services to small businesses.

-- ADSL-lite deployments to consumers are expected to begin this

year, however, they will not be significant until 2000.

-- Of the many vendors announcing their intentions in the DSL

market, only handfuls are shipping product; Alcatel and Cisco are

clear leaders in early deployments.

-- Silicon vendors are finally seeing an uptick in their volume and

GlobeSpan, Alcatel Mietec and Conexant lead the market with

approximately 95 percent of sales combined.
