Dow sets new record after jobs data soothes
In the overall market, gaining stocks outpaced decliners on
both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq.
The stock market's gains came after the Labor Department
released employment data for April that calmed some jitters
about inflation. Inflation anxiety had been fanned the day
before by a speech from Federal Reserve Chairman Alan
Greenspan.
Greenspan on Thursday raised the issue during a speech to
the Chicago Federal Reserve, noting that the tight U.S. labor
market risk fueling inflation.
