I agree with you about a common core of learning being transmitted- and so what if our traditions stem from dead white guys? You can't have oppression AND claim the minorities (including women) made some huge contribution in the areas they were allegedly denied. The dead white guys did a fair job with the time they had and anyone can profit by studying them.

I think when you talk about the common core of culture, there is a pragmatic reason for it. There are certain things that we know to be true, and to give you an idea of how common they are, I am taking these examples from Aristotle, whom I am reading right now (Rhetoric). We know, if a man has a fever, that he is ill. We know, if a woman has milk in her breasts, that she has given birth. These are the things that Aristotle calls necessary signs, although I think it must mean something different in Greek. After all, a woman who has given birth does not have milk in her breasts many years after the fact, but only women who have given birth have milk in their breasts.

If someone doesn't know these things, that doesn't make them stupid, but it does make them ignorant, and you have to explain it to them, if it comes up.

Similarly, in the old syllogism, All men are mortal; Socrates is a man; therefore, Socrates is mortal, it is assumed not only that the listener knows what "mortal" is, but also what a syllogism is. If a person doesn't know what "mortal" is, or what a syllogism is, you have to explain it to them.

A proper education explains these things, and many others, long in advance of their necessity.
