Hi Eric - All this recent good news about 3Com reminds me somewhat of the Novell days. Remember those days when no amount of good news did much for the stock? Rumors did more to move the stock than anything else until Eric Schmidt had several successive quarters of positive earnings to report.

I may be mistaken but there also appears to be the perception by the investment community that 3Com is going up against Microsoft with the Palm product. Novell had this problem, and may still have, when they were trying to convince the investors that they had a networking product that would survive and prosper in spite of Microsoft.

Patience should pay off very well for the investors in 3Com, as it did for those who stayed with Novell. Sorry to say that I bailed out at about 12 5/8 when Novell was on its way to 28. But, at that time I had a base of around 7 1/8 so it wasn't too bad. And after a couple of years, I'd had enough of Novell's financial reporting techniques.

With all the trading activity in 3Com, I believe that it provides a good profit opportunity for those fortunate enough to have bought in at the low twenty's.

I have recently been doing some day trading with this stock because of its intraday trading range and making a few bucks. However, I have accumulated JAN00 20 and 25 contracts to protect my interests in case of any sudden upward moves in the stock.

How long have you been investing in 3Com? What is your opinion about 3Com's future success?

Good luck in your trading.

Regards,
Elmo

Could it be good news for 3COM? as "Lucent races to speed integration of Ascend - Reuters Securities's quote". Any comments? As we know, the phrase from Lucent, "We make the things that make
communications work". This phrase is ok for the telephone era, however paradigm shift is from phone systems to cable and wireless systems. Lucent is behind the 8 ball and now racing to catch up. (AT&T's recent purchase is on track & on the money). Anyway, 3COM is a leader with these futuristic systems. Again, my old theory is that both 3COM and Lucent should merge. " 3COM/Lucent make the things that make communications work" sounds better. ???????.

"my discussion w/Gorzer on Yahoo msg.board":
I totally agree with your points. Yes, Either, more
acquisitions to compete with the real big guys or become a target/or position itself to be bought out(ie..again, my old arguement is that LU should be the buyer). Honestly, EricB. is very talent engineer however I firmly believe he can not take 3COM to the next level w/ mass marketing of sales effort in order to double and triple revenues. (( My saying, you can have several hot products to offer however if no one knows the products are there, then what is the purpose of having them???))) Yes, 3COM is getting it's products to the market place,it has a good distribution network, and it has lowered it's inventory problems nonetheless, there are several markets that 3com can tap into in order to reach a wider range of customers..... 200 million customers is nothing... next level
billion/billions....yes billions. . Now, that's mass marketing.... Note: Currently, LU have extreme high goals to double and triple it's revenues, however they will never achieve them at the rate, that they are going. Again, they need a money maker like 3COM.

How can I explain it??? For LU to say, that they have high revenues goals in their future plans then, now, they are racing to intergrate Acend, says one thing to me. POOR EXECUTION, and No futuristic visioning /or foresight... (.... One should never have to race to make things happen, it should be planned). ... . P--- Poor Planning!!!!!!!!
In short, LU is behind in a world of communication "things" that make communication work, and may be a bit too late to intergrate Acend. In a world of lighting speed technologies, foresight and execution is so important in this new communication age and it looks like they have lost it. Again, they need an additional acquisition to achieve their futuristic goals. And, I believe 3COM could be the link and should be part of the team. LU should be have the same type visions as AT&T for future growth.
