The highest suicide rate for both genders is in the 80-84 year age group (five to six times more prevalent than among teens). In all age groups, the attempt rate is twice as high for females as males; the completion rate is higher for males in all age groups, ranging from twice to six times that exhibited by females (as the above poster reported).
It is postulated that this is due to the method of choice among males (firearms, used in 60% of all cases; 79% of firearm suicides are committed by white males. Twice as many women as men attempt suicide, but the most frequently employed method is pill ingestion.

This blows the implication that suicide is a "teen" problem (in fact, there are less than 3000 teen suicides a year). It also blows the implication that the gun is the "weapon of choice", since women attempt suicide at twice the rate of men, but usually take pills. Men have a much higher rate of gun use, and a much higher rate of completion: Therefore, the worst that can be said is that guns are more efficient than pills.
