Maurice,

I agree on your take of the economics of war. I think that one of the major drivers of the healthy economy that the US has recently been blessed is the "peace dividend". The military industrial complex is ultimately a drag on the economy. I love your analogy of building a road that goes nowhere. The major benefit the economy has gained from military spending is in the form of innovations later applied to commercial enterprise, like maybe uh CDMA. Other than that military spending is an insurance policy (necessary evil).

>>PS: Unfuelled by other than Japanese Green Tea!!

Is this tea smoked???

Mq, in terms of keeping the thread in good order, Surfer Mike, with his gentle cattle prodding, rarely railing, usually ribald and always clever posts, and you, helping us always expand our consciousness to the magic of the Q! beyond our mundane, quotidian spheres and preoccupations, help us keep our heads straight:
<Those who risk their lives and create the means for defeat of these people are worthy of the highest praise. I'm pleased to support Qualcomm which is involved in Condor, which will defend one of the best examples of freedom the world has seen [though it is about as perfect as a hagfish....Of course I admire my father who spent 4 years in the 1940s successfully defeating Germany in the middle east, fortunately, for me, living to tell the tale.>

Although a different war, locale and cause and Aussies and not Kiwis, I'm reminded this dank, misty morning of "Breaker Morant", one of my all-time favorite films (and with a slightly different tilt). Regards this late Sat. nite, early Sunday. Steven
(PS: Wondering about that Japanese green tea myself)
