Barb, what do you think of arresting drunk drivers before they have harmed someone, because they constitute an unreasonable hazard?

On the issue of pornographic depictions of violent and degrading behavior, the evidence is mixed, but it not clear- cut that it is harmless either. There is a strong correlation with obsessive consumption of such images and acting- out, it is just difficult to prove causality. On the other hand, even if there were not a one hundred percent correlation between the consumption of such images and acts of rape and sexual abuse, it may be that by markedly increasing the likelihood of acting out it should be banned. The question, which also encompasses our own uncertainty of analysis, is what is a tolerable level of risk to the community?

Actually, it could be that the cases where the violent offender points to pornography as the source of his "affliction" is the minority. Consider the vast # of pornographic movies, magazines and pictures sold in the US alone. If you figure that over 10,000,000 different people made a purchase of this nature (and the # is likely higher - by a vast amount), how many of these people committed a violent act? It's likely to be below 1%.
Sort've like Littleton. When you consider how many kids carry guns in schools today, the fact that only 1% of all youth homicides occurred on school grounds points more to the fact that schools are safe and that Littleton is an aberration.
