Gustave, since John Paul's visit to Romania seems in keeping with a general program of reconciliation of the Vatican with various groups (remember, he is also the first to make a serious effort towards rapproachment with Israel); since ecumenical talks among Anglican, Lutheran, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic representatives have intensified during his pontificate; and since the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church have already gotten far enough down the road to healing the Schism that they have permitted intercommunion in recent years, a very serious step, I think that the only immediate political significance of the visit was the turmoil in the adjacent region, which has involved communal hostilities. But of course I am probably a Vatican agent too:-)....

On the pilgrimage, you may be right, obviously there is a nefarious sympathy there. I would note that all nations, even the United States, wish to preclude illegal entry, and to control the influx of immigrants to some extent, and that it is reasonable to keep the pace of immigration moderate, to permit assimilation, both cultural and economic. Having recently visited the Ellis Island Museum for the third time, and being the descendants of immigrants, I am in a mood to sympathize with your irritability over such matters, however:-)...
