Mike, Let me start by saying Cisco is the DOMINANT player in routers today!!! I hear they have ~70% of the entire router market. They have high margins from the lack of competition is this area.

The initial ASND GFR was a failure, but I expect to see a second release this year. Now if the LU/ASND team can produce a router which competes with the 12000, I see nothing but trouble for Cisco.

The LU PacketStar was released in Feb99 and we are in May99 with a second release due in June99. I'll assume the Feb99 R1 didn't have the required functionality for production. So we now have to wait until June99 and SuperComm. If ASND and Lucent can't produce a timely router, they can attempt to purchase Juniper.

I don't see the need to purchase Juniper for the next generation IP+ATM platform. They have the required resources/talent to build this next generation platform.
