CPQ has thought for years that cable modems would lead the technology, and that there would be an eventual battle between cable and DSL telco for high-speed access to the home. They have a well honed strategy which includes investments in both technologies (roadrunner and DSL technology providers to name a few).

In their consumer products, they also do out-of-the-box support both in hardware and software for not only cable or DSL but also satellite.

This is a very important battlefield for mindshare in the future. Clearly CPQ and MSFT need to continue to expand their reach "up the pipe" or they will end up being commodity providers. I doubt that either of these companies will let that happen.
