My list of essentials is very short. I would start with the Bible because it encapsulated western man's view of himself. I would include Darwin's Origin of Species because it debunked much of the romanticized view of the world previously held by educated people. It was really a revolutionary work in every sense of the word. I think that Malthus needs to be added to the list. I think that Freud also needs to be included, not because his view of human behavior was correct, but because he was willing to explore the darker side of the mind.

I will add some books later as I give it more thought.
