You also have to consider that the UK wants to join the European Union, after all.

Therefore, as a first step, it is practical to divest itself of its 'excess' gold (just as the Dutch had done). Otherwise, the 'excess' gold will have to go to the European Central Bank. Of course, the Brits are also deliberately driving the POG down. They are certainly killing two birds with one stone, aren't they?
