Playing a news event definitely helps to manage the risk to potential reward aspect of the trade. Since this is an earnings play, are you playing of established earnings momentum? This is much more predictable as far as market response goes, including that of a pre-earnings announcement run up. But then what has been DELL's earnings momentum for the past couple quarters? Have they been delivering good earnings surprises? Is the slowdown in the PC sector over with now? Still, the market may be a continuing negative in this picture.

Or are you playing on the possibility of DELL surprising the market with its first good report? If so, this is a *much* more risky approach. And there will be limited runup since the spotlight will continue to remain off of DELL. The risk to reward for a trade like this would be high.

Thanks for your comments on my last post.
