J.P. Morgan stock jumps on takeover talk

NEW YORK, May 13 (Reuters) - J.P. Morgan & Co. Inc.'s stock jumped on Thursday on speculation the investment and commercial bank would sell out to the likes of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS - news) or Chase Manhattan Corp. (CMB - news), analysts said.

The stock, which is hovering near its all-time high of 148-3/4 set in April last year, jumped 7-1/2 to 146-5/8 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange. J.P. Morgan, which has in the past maintained it wanted to remain independent, declined to comment.

Warburg Dillon Read analyst Thomas Hanley on Thursday outlined hypothetical bank merger combinations to the firm's sales force, naming J.P. Morgan as a possible target. On April 7 Hanley issued a report saying J.P. Morgan might decide to sell out over the next year or so. He listed Chase, Goldman and Merrill Lynch and Co. Inc. (MER - news) as potential buyers.

J.P. Morgan, often the subject of merger speculation, was hit by losses in emerging markets last year and analysts have said it might need to find an ally to compete against the giant financial services companies formed from mergers last year, such as Citigroup Inc. (C - news).
