Companies are lining up to get out of the computer business, and into the consumer appliance business. Here are National's plans.

National is still expected to launch a highly integrated X86 device — and one OEM user of that device — at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan next month. Speaking before Wednesday's announcement to exit the PC processor business, Jean-Louis Bories, general manager of the Cyrix group, said the chip would include the GMX core, north and south bridge logic, MPEG-2 and DVD capabilities.

VCD player boasts 10-second anti-shock memory

MAINLAND CHINA — The SK287A personal VCD player from Shenzhen Starking Electronics Co. Ltd features a 10-second anti-shock memory and enhanced error correction. It uses a Sony mechanism and a C-Cube MPEG-1 decoder.

Other features include a 16-bit DAC, karaoke functions, a DBBS subwoofer and stereo sound. The model supports nine picture windows and PAL/NTSC reception.

It runs on two AA batteries or a 5V adapter. Dimensions are 156x132x29mm and weight is 300g.
