I share your sentiments about Rubin. I think Greenspan is a smart man who has "had to believe" the new era so much that it sunk in to some extent. I guess you've looked at some of the links that the twins have posted to the gold fanatics page ... why would he have said all those things? There is also a "kind" of smart -- I know some PhDs in econ for instance, some of whom make obvious financially unsound decisions ... sometimes folks get so focused on their area of experitise -- I don't really know what Greenspan's area of expertise is, but certainly he has recently majored in this productivity crud and the CPI -- and he probably has his share of political pressure to do what the administration wants him to do -- probably hard for him to be a big picture kind of guy with the info overload.

I think those that are truly intelligent (I'm not classing myself in this group) are the ones who are very good at both classifying and filtering out information that is not useful to the given purpose. There are lots of folks who know a lot of information, but have little in the way of useful context. Perhaps that is Greenspan.

Probably opening myself up for a lot of criticism here, but that's certainly what I have seen in the engineering profession and I know that it isn't particular to engineers.
