Excellent and thank you. This was my point also. It got blotted out amidst all the ... feelings. >Person A may never develop a taste for poetry, for example, and so will prefer to read Darwin, say, rather than Dante. But at least he will know who Dante was. He will be able to orient himself in the cultural landscape, in other words. To me, that is what is essential.< What we need (or at least would all benefit in having) are common cultural mile-markers, be they Aesop or Homer or Teller.
