Of course, the other issue is whether AOL's GUI can be easily adapted to the always-on world of broadband. Since the IP address is assigned at boot-up, their users might start using standard tools and ignoring the AOL ad-supported interface.
If they did that they wouldnt have ever signed up for AOL in the first place. People actually like the AOL interface, its a whole lot less overwhelming than all those options in IE.
But still you do have a very valid point. I've only used a friends AOL account just to see what it was like, but it seemed that the ads bombard you mostly at login.
I have a feeling that I cant really explain that always on connections will change the user experience in a way that doesnt benefit AOL and its emphasis on simplicity. I'd love more input on this topic...

ATHM comes with a customized version of Netscape with a proprietary display of information. You can simple ignore it (as I do) and use standard TCP/IP and use any browser you want to access the Internet.
