To be honest, my dad never had any Ampex either. But as a career officer in the army, he ran the Officer's Club, and as such, learned how to wheel and deal, ala Sgt Bilko of old. For instance, he was always bringing home new and used baseball equipment, pills from the dispensary, and most of all Ampex and Sound Craft tape for me to use. I said, "how does it work, how do you get this stuff?" He replied, "Well, if I need some good cuts of meat for the club, I go ask the butcher what he needs. The butcher says, 'I could use some antihistimines and some bats for my kids' team.' So he asks the medics what they need, and right on down the line. Ultimately, he got everybody what they wanted, and he brought some of the excess home for the family too. In the case of the tape, " CID Intelligence (an oxymoron) said they have a new shipment of tape coming in for this year, so they had to clear out last years' tape first. If I hadn't taken it, they would have tossed it out as garbage" Anyhow, that's how a peacetime army works on a daily basis. Tax dollars at work...Bilko had it down......al
